Full Moon field guide · UK dates

The Hunter's Moon

The full Moon immediately after the Harvest Moon, so it can fall in October or November.

UK default: Europe/London (GMT/BST).

What Hunter's Moon means

Hunter's Moon follows the Harvest Moon by one lunation. The traditional explanation links the bright post-harvest evenings with tracking game across cleared fields; its date moves when the Harvest Moon moves.

It normally arrives as UK evenings are becoming markedly longer and cooler.

These are popular English-language almanac names rather than a single universal cultural calendar. NASA’s Moon phase guide describes the modern naming usage. Seasonal descriptions here follow the northern hemisphere; southern seasons are reversed.

This is a calculated seasonal designation, not a fixed month label. The table follows the full Moon nearest the September equinox for Harvest Moon and the immediately following full Moon for Hunter's Moon.

What to notice from the UK

Look east soon after sunset and compare its rise time with the preceding night's Moon.

The disc looks full on the nights around the exact instant. A low Moon may look larger or warmer because of perspective and the atmosphere, not because its phase changed.

Other recorded labels

Almanacs do not share one universal naming system. This month is also listed as Winterfylleth in an Old English grouping and Harvest Moon in a modern Celtic-revival grouping.
